Team CANCAN would like to applaud Dr. Bette Caan on her retirement from an extraordinary career in cancer epidemiology and survivorship research! The CANCAN team would like to express our deepest gratitude for her scientific leadership, mentorship, and unwavering commitment to understanding cancer cachexia. For more than four decades at Kaiser Permanente Northern California, Bette helped shape the fields of nutritional epidemiology, cancer survivorship, body composition research, and energy balance in cancer. She authored more than 450 scientific publications and helped establish some of the most influential cohort studies in cancer survivorship research. Within CANCAN, Bette was instrumental in launching and leading the Kaiser Permanente prospective observational studies (UNCOVER), which are now becoming the largest and most comprehensive cachexia cohorts ever assembled. These efforts created an unprecedented clinical and epidemiologic resource that will influence cachexia research for years to come. Beyond her remarkable scientific accomplishments, Bette has been an extraordinary collaborator, mentor, and advocate for patients living with cancer. On behalf of the entire CANCAN team, we thank Bette for her immense contributions to the field and to our community. We wish her a joyful and well-deserved retirement and look forward to seeing the lasting impact of her work continue for decades to come.
